Alive with Christ!

“Because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ!” ~Ephesians 2:4-5

Some of us are still buried in a tomb. We’re dead. Or, at least we act like we’re dead. Most of us have followed Jesus to Jerusalem, deciding to die to ourselves, willing to die with Christ. We’ve followed Jesus to the garden and suffered, walking through the valley of the shadow of death, faithfully enduring pain and grief. We’ve followed Jesus step by step to the cross, exposing ourselves to ridicule and shame, sacrificing ourselves for the benefit of others.

A lot of us, though, have never followed Jesus out of the grave.

Even though we’ve been baptized for the forgiveness of our sins, even though we’ve received the gift of God’s Holy Spirit living inside us, a lot of us have never been resurrected. A lot of us don’t live like we’ve been given the gift of eternal life by the Almighty Author of Life. We live like we’re still dead.

We don’t sing. We don’t work. We don’t explore or experiment. We don’t accept challenges or tackle new tasks. We don’t grow. We don’t laugh.

Singing and working and exploring and growing and laughing are what you do when you’re alive. If you’re grumpy all the time, you’re not living the resurrection life. If you’re negative all the time, you’re dead. What are you thinking, “God’s going to fix my attitude when I get to heaven?”

Some of you are still asleep. You live like it. Wake up, O sleeper! Rise from the dead and Christ will shine on you!

But I want to play it safe. Better safe than sorry. I don’t want to take any risks. I don’t want to go out on a limb. I don’t want to change. I don’t need to grow.

Man, you’re living in the dark and cold of the grave! And that’s not really living.

Jesus is no longer in that garden tomb. Our Christ is alive today and reigning in glory at the right hand of our Father in heaven! And that’s where you are, too. He’s already seated you there, right beside him. Now, start acting like it. Live like it! Follow Jesus out of the tomb, into the warmth and energy and light of his resurrection life.

Sunday’s Coming

The great biblical scholar and writer N. T. Wright asks, “Is it any wonder people find it hard to believe in the Resurrection of Jesus if we don’t throw our hats in the air? Is it any wonder we find it hard to live the Resurrection if we don’t do it exuberantly in our liturgies? Is it any wonder the world doesn’t take much notice if Easter is celebrated as simply the one-day happy ending tacked on to forty days of fasting and gloom?”

Yes, the Resurrection of Christ is our greatest event. Yes, Easter is the Church’s greatest day.

Take Christmas away and, in biblical terms, you lose two chapters at the front of Matthew and Luke. That’s it. Take Easter away and you don’t have a New Testament. You don’t have Christianity. As Paul says, our preaching is worthless, we are still in our sins, and we are to be pitied beyond all men.

We can’t allow Easter bunnies and eggs and dresses and bonnets (does anybody wear Easter bonnets anymore?) or furniture sales or car lot closeouts to distract us or blow us off course. Easter Sunday is our greatest Sunday. And we should put the flags out.

We should rejoice in our Lord’s Resurrection. We should celebrate his current and forever reign at the right hand of the Father. We should declare the gracious gift of eternal life that comes to all those who share in Christ’s Resurrection. And we should live — man, we should live!! — into the Resurrection, through the Resurrection, because of the Resurrection!

It’s Friday. But Sunday’s comin’!

After Lent

God’s Church has always observed a period of fasting and prayer in preparation for the celebration of Christ’s Resurrection at Easter. Christian writings from the early third century refer to the mandatory, though not uniform, participation in these spiritual disciplines and place the origins of the practice back to “our forefathers.” Eusebius and others refer to Lent in their fourth century writings. The church councils of that age point to Lent as being established by the Apostles.

The practice of Lent itself cannot be found in the Bible, although Holy Scripture does command and assume regular times of fasting and prayer. So, I can honestly affirm Lent as a noble and faithful and Christian thing to do. Absolutely. No doubt. Some of you reading this blog annually observe Lent. You give up a bad habit, put away a certain vice, abstain from a particular pleasure in order to bring your mind and body into a fuller communion with our Lord.

Praise God! That’s fantastic!

But if Lent is a time to give things up, Easter is the time to take things up.

If Calvary means putting to death things in your life that need killing off so you can flourish as a Christian and as a God-created human being in his image, then Easter should mean planting and watering and training up new things in your life so you can grow in your sacred relationships with God and man. Yes, you have to weed the garden from time to time. We all do. Sometimes that ground cover or those stumps need some serious digging to be eliminated. That’s Lent. But you don’t want to just turn your garden into a neat little bed of blank dirt. Easter is the time to sow new seeds and plant a few bulbs. Resurrection Day is the time to start something new, something that will blossom and fill your world with color and perfume and righteous fruit.

As we celebrate Easter together this Sunday, why don’t you take up something new? Tackle a new task. Enter into a new venture. Start something, commit to something wholesome and fruitful and outgoing and self-giving. You may only be able to do it for 40-days, just like you may only be able to give up Dr Pepper and Little Debbies for the six weeks of Lent. But if you really make a start on it, it might give you a sniff of new possibilities, new hopes, new potentials you never dreamed of.

It might help you wake up in a whole new way. And that’s what Easter is all about.

Can These Bones Live?

The names kept coming by the hundreds. People kept getting out of their pews and walking down front by the dozens. I thought for a long moment it would never stop.

We were preaching the dry bones vision in Ezekiel 37 here at Legacy yesterday. God takes his great prophet and puts him in the middle of this valley “full of bones…a great many bones.” The bones represent to Ezekiel the spiritually dead “house of Israel.” They are a people who are “dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.” God’s servant is waist deep in these bones, surrounded by these dry bones as far as he could see. There’s no life in these bones. No hope for life in these bones. No spirit. No pulse. No organs. No heart. No nothing. And God asks Ezekiel, “Can these bones live?”

See, we’re still surrounded by these dry bones. We see these dead people every day. There are dead men and dead “Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.”women and dead teenagers all around us. Sometimes I feel like I’m walking right through the middle of Ezekiel’s valley of bones. Spiritually dead people. Cut off from God because of their sins. No relationship with God. No salvation. No spiritual life. Some of these people are relatives and friends that we love very much.

Your son has left the Lord. Your daughter is no longer a member of a Christian faith community. Your husband has never submitted to the Lordship of Jesus. Your grandchildren have not been baptized into Christ. Your niece is living in sin. Your nephew doesn’t even believe in God. Your wife. Your aunt. Your best friend.

It took a couple of real bone-heads to pull this off!  Jim Collins & Wayne Steele - I knew they were good for something. What a beautiful use of their spiritual gifts! Thank you, guys.

Jim & Wayne put together and painted a massive mural of Ezekiel’s dry bones. Twenty feet long and eight feet high. Very impressive. We set it up on the stage, right in front of the baptistry. And it served as the backdrop to our lesson from Ezekiel 37. It served as the backdrop to this discussion about the people in our lives who are spiritually dead.

Can these bones live?

“I will put breath in you and you will come to life!”God says “yes!” God demonstrates in an unforgettable way his unflinching and unwavering determination to save his people. It’s not based on any good thing Israel is going to do. Israel can’t do anything. Israel’s dead! Israel’s resurrection as the cleansed and forgiven and restored and changed and fully alive people of God has everything — EVERYTHING!!! — to do with God’s power and his will to do it. There’s hope in these dead bones because of the love and power of our God.

So we determined to give these spiritually dead loved ones to our God in faith and in prayer. And before we prayed together as a church family, we wanted the names. We asked our brothers and sisters to write the names down on the stickers we provided and then walk to the front and physically place them on the board among the dry bones.

And here they came.

“O Sovereign Lord, you alone know”Old people. Young people. Whole families. Kids. People on crutches and using walkers. People who are unable to climb the steps but begged those of us in the aisles to take their names up there for them. At one point it was seven or eight deep on the stage. There were lines. We had to wait. It took a while. Almost four thousand total stickers. Well over five thousand different names. And we cried and we smiled and we hugged and we patted backs and we helped each other with stickers. We stood together and gazed at this wall of names. And then we prayed.

It was powerful. It was inspiring. I pray that God was glorified. I pray that we grew closer together as a church family as we realized that we are all carrying similar burdens. I pray that our faith was strengthened as we realized together that 1) only God can fix the people and circumstances that bring us so much sorrow and 2) it really is his holy will to do just that!

More than 5,000 names

We can’t fix these people. We’ve tried. We’ve tried everything. Only God can change hearts and renew a person’s mind. “O Sovereign Lord, you alone know.” That’s what Ezekiel says. So we give these loved ones to God. In faith. And prayer.

“I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live.” ~John 5:25

Remembering Ray

Remembering RayToward the end of our church assemblies on Sunday mornings, I’ll usually stroll from my seat near the front of the worship center to take a position near the doors in the back. I do most of my hand-shaking and hugging and greeting back there. I’ll make that walk during the singing of a closing song. And, without fail, for the past couple of years, I’ve been grabbed from the center aisle about three-fourths of the way back.

Ray Manos always grabbed me. And he wouldn’t let go until I had hugged him or shaken his hand or patted his back. A year ago he would whisper, “Hi, Allan” or “Good job.” Recently, though, Ray would just smile. He would just grab me and smile.

Alzheimer’s wrecked my brother Ray. This horrible disease slowly and deliberately and without mercy took away his memory and his abilities to think and reason and converse.

But it never took away Ray’s smile. Ray kept smiling.

About six months ago Ray’s wonderful wife, JQ, pulled me aside after worship one day and said, “I hope Ray doesn’t embarrass you when he reaches out like that.”

Are you kidding me? It always made my week. It was one of the highlights of every Sunday for me. Ray couldn’t kid me anymore about my tie like he used to. He couldn’t challenge me on a sermon point or ask me about my girls like he used to. But he could still reach out to me and shake my hand and slap my back. And smile. He could still love me. And he did.

For the past several months, conversations with Ray have been one-sided; not really conversations at all. He couldn’t really ask questions anymore. He just answered them. Mostly. We were talking about the weather two weeks ago. Or, I guess, I was doing all the talking. Ray was listening. Then we/I started talking about Legacy. We/I began talking about the people in our church family. I reminded Ray that when my family and I moved to Legacy a little over three years ago, the very first congratulatory email we received was from him and JQ. They had expressed their excitement, pledged their love and support, vowed to be a source of encouragement to us.

Then Ray asked me a question about something I had preached the Sunday before. I reminded him that I had preached from 1 John. Ray thought for a moment and said, “I don’t believe I know him.”

Sunday morning, day before yesterday, Ray left us for the next life. He’s made that passage now. Eternal life in the holy presence of Almighty God belongs to him now. Perfect peace. Brand new body and mind. Ray is realizing right now the culmination — the fulfillment — of all the faithful promises and plans of our Lord. For him and for all of us.

But that doesn’t mean I’ll never receive another hug or smile from Ray. Not at all. It’s coming.

Not this Sunday. That walk up the aisle at the close of our service this next Sunday will be sad for me. But it’s coming. I imagine the next time I see my brother Ray will be on that day of glory when, just like always, he’ll grab me and smile and say, “Good job.” And I look forward to it.

Lord, come quickly!

Deep Church

Resurrection LifeI’m in the middle of Eugene Peterson’s Practice Resurrection. It’s the fifth and final book in his series of “conversations in spiritual theology.” It just came out. I’m devouring it. It centers on Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, especially the line in Ephesians 4:13 about “attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” What does it mean to grow in Christ? What does spiritual maturity look like? How do we measure it? Why doesn’t spiritual growth, development of the mind of Christ, seem to be as high a priority in our churches as it does in our Scriptures?

See, it’s really easy to put down the Church. It’s easy to dismiss the Church as ineffective. Irrelevant. It’s easy to be condescending toward the Church because the Church appears to be in such a mess. It seems that the Church has had little impact, if any, in making any headway toward peace and good will on earth. Nobody’s clamoring to get inside. Nobody’s breaking down our doors to get closer to God. The world is coming out of the bloodiest and most violent century in history. And this current century appears to be determined to pass it. What good is the Church?

Well, Peterson’s point is that maybe we’ve got the purposes of the Church all wrong. Maybe the expectations we have of Church are wrong. At the very least, they’re not big enough.

Peterson points to a term coined by C. S. Lewis way back in 1952: deep church. It helps convey the ocean fathoms of all that God is doing in and with and through his Church. Things seen and unseen, things from eternity past to eternity future, things here and there, things God started long ago that are being finished today, things that are being started by God today that won’t be fulfilled in our lifetimes. Deep church. Practice Resurrection

“It takes both sustained effort and a determined imagination to understand and embrace church in its entirety. Casual and superficial experience with church often leaves us with an impression of bloody fights, acrimonious arguments, and warring factions. These are more than regrettable; they are scandalous. But they don’t define church. There are deep continuities that sustain church at all times and everywhere as primarily and fundamentally God’s work, however Christians and others may desecrate and abuse it.

Church is an appointed gathering of named people in particular places who practice a life of resurrection in a world in which death gets the biggest headlines: death of nations, death of civilization, death of marriage, death of careers, obituaries without end. Death by war, death by murder, death by accident, death by starvation. Death by electric chair, lethal injection, and hanging. The practice of resurrection is an intentional, deliberate decision to believe and participate in resurrection life, life out of death, life that trumps death, life that is the last word, Jesus life. This practice is not a vague wish upwards but comprises a number of discrete but interlocking acts that maintain a credible and faithful way of life, Real Life, in a world preoccupied with death and the devil.

These practices include the worship of God in all the operations of the Trinity; the acceptance of a resurrection, born-from-above identity in baptism; the embrace of resurrection formation by eating and drinking Christ’s resurrection body and blood at the Lord’s Table; attentive reading of and obedience to the revelation of God in the Scriptures; prayer that cultivates an intimacy with realities that are inaccessible to our senses; confession and forgiveness of sins; welcoming the stranger and outcast; working and speaking for justice, healing, and truth, sanctity and beauty; care for all the stuff of creation. The practice of resurrection encourages improvisation on the basic resurrection story as given in our Scriptures and revealed in Jesus. Thousands of derivative unanticipated resurrection details proliferate across the landscape. The company of people who practice resurrection replicates the way of Jesus on the highways and byways named and numbered on all the maps of the world.

This is the Church.”

Massive. Eternal. Rich. Huge. Deep.

I am honored to be invited by Rick Ross to speak tonight at the Decatur Church of Christ. Rick was our preaching minister at Mesquite when Carrie-Anne and I were there from 2000-2003. And I believe Rick is the first preacher I ever seriously listened to. Really. Of course, I’ve been listening to preaching since the day I was born. But Rick is the first preacher I ever really paid attention to. Not just his sermons, which were powerful and bold, but his life.

Rick carried himself in a godly way. Patient. Gentle. Encouraging. Cheerful. Determined. Strong. His preaching came out of that life. His sermons were born out of his own walk with our God. He was Thomas Long’s Witness of Preaching before I had ever heard of Thomas Long or read his book. It moved me, the way Rick lived and preached, preached and lived. Yes, there were other things going on in my life then. I was growing in Christ, I was maturing in my faith, I was thinking differently about eternal matters and God’s purposes for me. But Rick was all over that. God was working in him and through him to teach me.

Rick and Beverly treated me with great patience and understanding even as I acted selfishly and foolishly in church settings and congregational matters. They embraced my family. They showed me grace. They taught me grace.

Watching Rick and learning from him helped motivate me to answer God’s call to preach his Word. I’m so thankful for the ways God used Rick to shape me during those short years in Mesquite. I’m grateful for the rock solid example of faithfulness and trust in God that Rick has been to me and everyone who knows him since February. And I’m honored to speak to his church tonight in Decatur.
